In common with many wealthy men, Kelso King is a recluse - but with good reason. Twelve years previously, a disatisfied investor made an attempt on King's life. Although the millionaire survived the shooting, the incident left him with a permanent, bullet-hole-shaped scar in his right shoulder, and a biothermatic imbalance in his body; he may feel freezing cold one moment; then boiling hot the next. As a result, he never ventures from the security of his palatial, isolated residence, where he is attended by just three people: a secretary named Carson, Groalgo, a handyman, and his personal nurse, Ida Bering. He conducts business entirely via telephone. In recent weeks, however, no one has heard from King, or been able to contact him. Rumours concerning his silence have driven the stock of his business company down by ten points. In desperation, Ash, the chairman of the company's board of directors, calls in Honey and Sam to find out which member of the board leaked the confidential information regarding the millionaire's unavailability. The P.I.'s role in the affair changes, however, after Ida Bering is found dead at her home - an occurence which provides Honey with an opportunity to infiltrate the millionaire's home as the murdered nurse's replacement. Armed with several eavesdropping devices disguised as items of medical equipment, Honey drives to the King estate to attend an interview, while Sam, posing as a worker from a utility company, positions himself close to the grounds and tinkers with the power lines. Honey meets King and his staff, and passes the interview. She is then asked to remain at the mansion for twenty-four hours while her references are checked. Using the opportunity to take a couple of photographs of the millionaire without his knowledge, Honey sneaks out of the grounds late at night and meets with Sam. Using the crime lab in the back of the van, they develop the film Honey has taken, and realise that the man introduced to Honey as "Kelso King" is lacking the millionaire's characteristic scar... If the man in the mansion is an impostor, what has happened to the real Kelso King? In order to learn the answer, Honey returns to the grounds - and her role as nurse - but her nocturnal excursion has been witnessed by Groalgo, and it isn't long before the female Private Eye and her partner are running for their lives, along a path that leads to Kelso King's personal hell...
