Honey and Sam are hired by a man named Ben Fancher, who offers to pay them $200 if they will collect a package from a Safety Deposit Box, and then deliver it to him. Anticipating trouble, the two P.I.'s devise a
strategy which - they hope - will ensure the task is completed successfully. Sam collects the package, and when he finds himself
being tailed by two grim-faced men, he diverts to a sidestreet where Honey is
waiting in her car. Dropping the package into the Cobra's passenger
seat, Sam ducks into an alleyway while his partner makes good her escape, and transforms his appearance with the aid of a reversable coat, a flat cap, and some thick-framed spectacles. At
first, the subterfuge appears to have been successful. Sam's shadows walk
past him unknowingly, and he beings to retrace his steps towards the
main street. He is then approached by a corpulent and apparently unsighted man
who asks for his assistance in crossing the road. After guiding the man to the pavement opposite, Sam prepares to continue on his way - whereupon his beneficiary clubs him unconscious with a walking stick... Honey, meanwhile, has returned to the office,
concerned at the fact that Fancher failed to arrive at the appointed meeting place. Her distress increases when she discovers that Sam is also conspicuous by his absence. Telephoning their client's hotel, she learns that Fancher has checked out without leaving a forwarding address, and with little alternative, she opens the package. To
her astonishment, she finds that it contains half a million dollars in
cash... Honey barely has time to register this before she receives a
visitor - the fat man who assaulted Sam. Initially, he appears charming
and mildly eccentric; he hands Honey a bunch of flowers, and reveals that
his surname is Brillig - a word taken from a nonesense rhyme from Lewis
Caroll's "Alice in Wonderland". His true nature is revealed, however, when
he produces Sam's wallet - complete with his H. West and Company I.D. card -
and tells Honey that unless she hands him Fancher's package - and tells him
where he can find Fancher - Sam's life will be forfeit...
